La Fundación por la Arquitectura te invita a una edición de la serie “De Aquí y De Allá” con la firma de arquitectura, arquitectura paisajista, y diseño urbano, MARVEL. Conoceremos el trabajo reciente que realizan desde sus oficinas en San Juan, Virginia y la ciudad de Nueva York. Esta oficina multidisciplinaria lleva más de 20 años trabajando en la intersección entre el espacio público y privado, buscando soluciones de diseño que integran la naturaleza y responden a su contexto. Sus proyectos incluyen edificios de vivienda, espacios comerciales, instituciones culturales, centros educativos, edificios de gobierno, al igual que parques y espacios públicos. Los proyectos de MARVEL han sido reconocidos con más de 125 premios en la industria de la construcción, entre ellos el “Presidential Citation” del Instituto Americano de Arquitectos por integrar diseño y servicio comunitario.

Jonathan Marvel, FAIA, ASLA Affiliate
Jonathan Marvel is the Founding Principal of Marvel and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. Born in Puerto Rico, Jonathan is an architect and urban designer with over 30 years of experience providing architectural planning, community, economic and sustainable development of public spaces, educational institutions, single and multi-family housing, libraries, museums, and large-scale mixed-use developments. Jonathan has led Marvel’s efforts across countless typologies, from urban housing to single-family residences, from ground-up theaters to adaptive reuse performance spaces.
In 2017, Jonathan co-founded Resilient Power Puerto Rico and since then has spoken on behalf of the island’s needs at TEDx Dartmouth, The Architectural League, AIA Puerto Rico, UMass Club, Colegio de Arquitectos de Puerto Rico, Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico, and the Universitario Tecnológico de Bayamón’s Presidential Keynote. Jonathan is the recipient of national and international design awards including a 2019 Presidential Citation by the American Institute of Architects and being named one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People of 2019.
Jonathan sits on the boards of The Buckminster Fuller Institute and The Isamu Noguchi Museum and chaired the AIANY Chapter Committee on Planning and Urban Design from 2013 to 2019. Jonathan has contributed essays on museums, public community spaces, and micro-housing, and is also the founder of Truck Product Architecture, Rock 12 Security Architecture, and Citizen Designer, a participatory planning, listening and advocacy effort. Jonathan teaches at Pratt Institute’s Graduate School of Planning and Placemaking, and since 1990 has taught as an adjunct at Columbia, Harvard, Parsons, Rice University, Washington University, and Syracuse.
Edna Echandi-Guzmán, AIA
For 10 years, Edna Echandi-Guzman has contributed to Marvel Marchand’s work as a Project Architect. Her responsibilities have involved all phases of design, from schematic to construction observation. In addition, she has been involved in contractor bidding negotiation, master planning and permit filing. Edna’s projects with the firm include the Academia San Ignacio in San Juan, as well as rehabilitation planning for the urban centers of Camuy, Ceiba, and Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Her written work has been published in the DoCoMoMo Journal and the Re-View Magazine of Tulane University.
José Juan Terrasa-Soler, ASLA
José Juan is a registered and CLARB certified landscape architect with over 25 years of experience in environment, development, planning, and design. His professional practice, research, writing, and teaching focus on the intersection of ecology and design, including green infrastructure, landscape resilience, and sustainable urban design. Throughout his wide-ranging career, he has held leadership positions in corporate, governmental, and nonprofit organizations, like the Environmental Business Unit of CSA Architects & Engineers, and in the Government of Puerto Rico as Deputy Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, overseeing its Planning and Development Division.
As Director at Marvel, José Juan has participated in the early planning and design stages of a wide variety of projects, and as landscape architect of complex developments. Recent projects include El Portal Visitors’ Center at El Yunque National Forest, the Puerto Rico Center for Arts and Technology, and Building 77 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In addition, he has led efforts for a more resilient Puerto Rico with Resilient Power Puerto Rico, a designer-led nonprofit.
José Juan received his bachelor’s degree from Mount Saint Mary’s College (Maryland), and a master’s degree in Ecology, from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, a master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Yale University, and a master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University. He is a founding faculty member of the Master in Landscape Architecture degree program at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, in San Juan.
Raquel Marrero, AIA
Raquel Marrero has worked as a team designer and project coordinator at Marvel Marchand for 15 years. Her responsibilities have included Design Development and Construction Documents, Coordination with MEP Consultants, and Construction Supervision (site visits, submittals, RFIs, and clarifications) on a number of major commercial and residential projects, including the award-winnng renovation of the Vanderbilt and La Concha Hotels in San Juan. She also contributed to the US Housing and Urban Development initiative for elderly housing at Valle Dorado in Utuado. Prior to joining Marvel Marchand, Raquel worked at architecture firms in Puerto Rico, as well as in Los Angeles and Mexico City. She has been a recipient of a scholarship from the AIA, and was awarded the Hazel Fellowship for Design Excellence by UCLA
Annya Ramírez-Jiménez, AIA
Annya Ramírez-Jiménez, AIA, is a Director at Marvel. She oversees the architecture staff of the firm. Annya tackles complex projects with ease and is focused on achieving consensus from stakeholders while maintaining a clear design voice for each project. As a passionate advocate for equity, her career focuses on building a more equitable city that balances its resources to serve all residents.
She is currently leading multiple projects at various scales including the design and development of Rockaway Village; a new 1,700-unit neighborhood in Queens which will revitalize downtown Far Rockaway. In addition, Annya also leads several civic projects in the Bronx including the ground-up DDC-Bronx Animal Care facility, Orchard Beach Pavilion Renovation, and Bronx Arts Museum Renovation.
Annya was raised in Puerto Rico, and attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture, then settled in New York City after obtaining a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University GSAPP in 2003. She currently serves as a board member for The Clemente Center, a Puerto Rican and Latinx cultural space in the Lower East Side, and is a member of the AIANY Honors Committee.
Yadiel Rivera, ASLA PLA
Yadiel joined Marvel in 2017 as lead of its landscape architecture practice, where he has been in charge of managing open space, master plans and landscape projects. He has over 13 years of experience as a landscape architect and three as an architect, designing open public spaces in the United States, Puerto Rico and abroad. Through his experience as a multidisciplinary designer, he has negotiated the intersection between landscape architecture, architecture and urban design. He has managed projects in diverse contexts and at various design scales, taking ideas from conceptual design all the way through construction.
He currently manages Bronx Point, the ninth WEDG-verified project in NYC, a waterfront promenade project along the Harlem River in the Bronx that extends Mill Pond Park, creating a new nature walk framed by renewed native ecosystems as well as open access and views to the water. Yadiel is also leading the improvement of Norris Square Park, a multipurpose site in North Philadelphia.
Yadiel oversaw design and construction oversight of the first-ever open streetscape and park along the Las Vegas Strip, bringing back native desert vegetation and local materials to the streetscape of Las Vegas while keeping its sense of wonder and excitement. He also led teams of designers and consultants through the design of public parks in San Jose, CA; for the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, CA; and for Pier 57 Sky-Park in New York City. Yadiel received his Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Puerto Rico and Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.
